TACTIO

Background

For my capstone, I worked with my team to design a modular tactile sensor suite targeted for hobbyist and roboticists to easily incorporate touch capabilities into existing projects. I served as the team leader and worked on electrical, firmware, and software.

We made a custom PCB that used piezo-resistive materials and custom STM32 microcontroller firmware to sense relative pressure in a chainable 30mm x 30mm package. We implemented communication based on CAN Bus to allow for sensors to be easily added to the bus, poll specific readings, and toggle features on the fly with support for up to 63 sensors on a single chain. The chaining allowed for both power and data to be distributed, accommodating various geometeries and mounting distances. We created a flexible mounting system that allowed attaching to flat planes, cylinders, and spheres. We also developed a Python GUI that allowed multiple sensors to stream for visualization and recording.
